Introduction
War for Valtorra is a tactical strategy RPG in the same vein as games like the Fire Emblem series. The game features Serin, the main protagonist, who serves as the protege to the Valtorran king, Pavel. She works to personally solve problems plaguing the Valtorran Union, though the responsibilities of her and her personal army quickly rise when the presence of otherworldly creatures makes itself known.
War for Valtorra, abbreviated WFV, was a game created among a small group of friends, which has been put on indefinite hiatus due to schooling purposes. All visual assets seen on this page, however, have been created by Jakob Gottschalk and are not indicative of any previous assets.
Dialogue Showcase
The following is a preview of dialogue written for War for Valtorra. The main purpose of the selected dialogue is to show off the ability to write a scene with a larger group of characters (five, in the case of the scene presented) while still keeping a unique voice for each character.
Scene opens in a forest. The characters are gathered in a vague circular shape. It is the day after the events of Chapter 2, and the group is taking a break after traveling for a good portion of the day. Dialogue begins.
Serin: Alright guys, it’s time to get moving. / We’ve got to be close to the village at this point!
Vernul: Ah, but I would enjoy it even more if we could just… stay here for a while longer.
Aria: You heard Serin, get up.
Vernul: There is truly no mercy on the road…
Dycedag: Must you be so melodramatic? / You don’t hear anybody else complaining.
Serin: Don’t worry, Vernul! Everything’s gonna be all downhill from here! / We’re almost there, I can feel it.
Vernul: (sigh) Please at least give me a moment to ready myself.
Serin: Of course!
Pardo: …Hey, you guys hear that?
Serin: Hear what?
Aria: Now that you mention it… It sounds like-
???: H-Help!
Serin: Sounds like trouble! Let’s go!
After dialogue, Serin, Aria, and Pardo exit from the area.
Vernul: Hey, wait up!
Dycedag: Hmm…
After dialogue, Dycedag and Vernul exit the area. Scene end.
Character Profiles
The following information deals with three of the side characters from War for Valtorra that were created by Jakob Gottschalk. The information offered is a quick summary of character traits, given with the intent of establishing a quick introduction to a character and summarizing what makes them unique.
Name: Pardo
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Appearance: Tall and lanky, with a slouch. Has pale skin, shaggy brown hair, and brown eyes. Wears a white button down shirt and padded leather pants. Also wears a black cloak and brown gloves.
Personality: Pardo is inexpressive and blunt. He keeps conversations short and is prone to sarcasm. Despite this, he likes helping others, which is the reason he became a healer in the first place.
Skills: Heavy experience with healing magic, understanding of dark magic.
Backstory: Born in the warmongering country of Tertorral, Pardo grew up surrounded by dark arts, as his mother was a practitioner of frowned upon dark magics. However, she forbade Pardo from using such magic, saying he was better than that. Thus, Pardo used his expertise in magic to eventually become a healer, quickly becoming infamous for his strange blend of dark and healing magics. Upon the formation of the Valtorran Union, Pardo joined the Valtorran Army, and serves directly under King Pavel in one of his personal regiments.
Name: Karrida
Age: 22
Gender: Female
Appearance: Muscular and broad, with a confident posture. Brown, freckled skin that is covered with scars from logging and fighting. Has short black, curly hair and brown eyes. Wears a leather vest with round metal pauldrons over a burlap shirt. Also has thick brown pants and heavy boots.
Personality: Karrida is not very smart, and has trouble understanding some things others find easy. However, she’s cheerful and easy to have fun with, though she does have a little bit of bloodlust in combat.
Skills: An expert at logging and a natural in combat. Also proficient in wilderness navigation.
Backstory: Born in the northern logging village of Borrial Woods, Karrida grew up helping with the harvesting of wood for the rest of the continent. While raised on logging, an ambush by bandits during her teenage years revealed an intense love of combat. Karrida went on to join her village’s militia, and continued to serve there after the formation of the Valtorran Union. At the start of War for Valtorra, Karrida makes her way towards the Valtorran capital, intending on requesting a larger presence of the Royal Army near Borrial Woods due to the sighting of strange creatures.
Name: Jiyin
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Appearance: Has a lean build with strong posture. Jiyin has bobcut, chestnut brown hair and pale skin. Typical of other Basilisk Riders, Jiyin totes heavy armor akin to that of a knight, minus the helmet. She also has a white blindfold tied over her eyes.
Personality: Jiyin is a very inexpressive, yet serene person. She often doesn’t have much to say unless outwardly prompted, and will not comment on most things unless explicitly asked to. However, when dealing with her Basilisk, Doryang, she is prone to baby talk and pampering.
Skills: Jiyin is a Basilisk Rider, which is an individual who is adept at commanding a mighty Basilisk in battle, a feat not many are able to accomplish due to Basilisks’ violent and short tempered natures.
Backstory: Born in the wildlife taming society of Korto, Jiyin was fretted over from a young age due to being born blind, which caused some concern for her participation in the Korton Bonding Ritual, a coming of age event where young Korton children must bond themselves to an animal from the wild. However, Jiyin managed to tame Doryang, a massive Basilisk that had been terrorizing the nearby village. From then on, Jiyin and Doryang formed a uniquely strong bond, and Jiyin later joined the Korton military, and then the Valtorran ‘Mounted Division’ after the formation of the Valtorran Union.
